First consultation: what to expect
The first consultation is an opportunity to understand the difficulties your child or adolescent is experiencing, their history, their family and school environment, as well as their strengths.
Should I bring my child?
This depends on your child’s age and the reason for the consultation. In some situations, it may be preferable to meet with the parents first. Parents may choose to attend the first consultation without their child if they wish. With adolescents, part of the consultation may also take place individually.
What happens next?
At the end of this first meeting, we consider the most appropriate next step together. This may involve a small number of consultations, psychotherapy, parental or family support, a psychological assessment or, where necessary, a referral to another professional.
Are the conversations confidential?
Psychology consultations are confidential. With children and adolescents, confidentiality is explained in a way that is appropriate for their age, while maintaining collaboration with parents when necessary.
Do you work with schools?
With the parents’ agreement, communication with teachers or other professionals supporting the child may be arranged to better understand the difficulties and coordinate recommendations.
Consultations are available in English or French.
